The space

A cultural place of meeting and creation

Established as a nonprofit, Le Baixu is a fully equipped multidisciplinary cultural space, occupying a former industrial hall of 150 m2, with a capacity from 80 (seated) to 120 (standing) guests, in the heart of the new trendy Tour&Taxis neighborhood.

The name “Baixu” means “beautiful” in the native language of the Pataxó peoples, indigenous to the south of the state of Bahia in Brazil. This word represents both the ambition of the project and the quality of the cultural events presented, as well as the founders’ attachment to Brazilian culture.

Le Baixu is a space to discover artists from all origins and of all styles. In a hall which combines perfect acoustics and lighting conditions, we offer concerts of small ensembles of classical, jazz, and world music, as well as art expositions, conferences, and documentary film screenings.

Le Baixu is also a space available for private events – seminars, conferences or receptions – which can offer a bar and technical support.

Le Baixu is also a space of encounter between artists, and children and adolescents, through the organization of creative and socially engaged workshops.

Diversity, whether it be in social class, race, religion, or gender, is one of the essential components of the project of Le Baixu.

Culture is that which allows one to know oneself and what we are made of.  Marcel Gauchet

The project

Conception of the project

Le Baixu is born from a chance encounter and a realization.

When Martine Renwart and Emmanuel De Ryckel met, they discovered they shared personal lived experiences in Brazil, having spent time in the favelas or in the remote regions of the country. As discussions continued, they understood that this love of Brazil fed a shared passion for music, and the arts in general. Even more so: that they were both convinced that art in all its forms could be a powerful tool to form and strengthen a shared solidarity.

This life experience inspired them both to contribute to the support of artists and to advance access to art to young people who have little or no opportunity.

Living in Brussels, Martine and Emmanuel also determined that this need to share culture involved both Brazil as well as Belgium, and in particular their city. Namely, they made the following realization:

Tenir un violon

Many talented artists, musicians, painters, sculptures, actors have no, or very limited, access to the known circuits to present their work, due to lack of funds, network, or accessible venues.

enregistrement en direct

Brussels lacks small spaces that are well equipped enough for shows and exhibitions, but which could also function as rehearsal space or meeting space between artist and audience.

Brussels is the home of many children and young people who are unaware what culture is, and what capacity it has to transform their life.

They began a project which rests on three big priorities:

  • Support for as-yet lesser-known artists, offering them optimal working conditions;

  • Exchange between generations and cultures, placing preference on bridges between styles, genres, and audiences;

  • Opening up towards young people who have no or few possibilities to discover the art world of today.

About Us
Project Founders

Martine Renwart  worked in artistic planning at the Royal Theatre of La Monnaie in Brussels for 12 years. She accompanied productions from inception up to the stage performances. As production manager, she oversaw several world tours. Later, she established a social project in Brazil for 14 year, in a small fishing village without water, electricity, school, or health infrastructure. Her last project supported the creation of a percussion group with the village youths who had never played music before, and the production of their concerts in Rio de Janerio and Sao Paolo. It is thus that she discovered all that makes up our shared humanity, transcending cultural differences, misunderstandings and incomprehension.

Emmanuel De Ryckel is a freelance consultant in pharmaceutical industry Supply Chains, which he has done for over 25 years. In this profession he has travelled to Rio de Janeiro over a hundred times, which has awakened his passion for Brazil and the country’s music. This contact developed his conviction that music, and art in general, is an ideal way to help young people in fragile situations, wherever they may be, to see their future with better prospects. For several years he has participated in creating documentaries and organizing concerts, aimed at promoting the cultural ties between France and Brazil.
